O.S.T - Birdman of Alcatraz (1962)

 

Elmer Bernstein’s score for 1962’s Birdman of Alcatraz may well be the composer’s most important score never to have found its way to a commercial release. After nearly 45 years, however, the film music headlines finally can turn to this masterful score and, all hyperbole aside, trumpet a truly historic discovery.

Birdman of Alcatraz was released by United Artists in 1962. The film was directed by John Frankenheimer and starred Burt Lancaster as convicted murderer Robert Stroud. For the film, Lancaster gave one of the most memorable performances of his career.

Birdman of Alcatraz comes from a time that could be quite accurately described as the most important two or three-year period of Elmer Bernstein’s entire 50-plus year career. Birdman, along with The Magnificent Seven, Summer and Smoke, Walk on the Wild Side, To Kill A Mockingbird and The Great Escape, all fall between 1960 and 1963. An astounding run of inspiration and success!

For Birdman of Alcatraz, Bernstein composed a magical score, so subtle, and so delicate that he brought compassion to the character of a convicted murderer and, in one of the best-scored scenes of his entire career, brought a baby bird into the world. Hearing the hour of music that Bernstein composed for this film, assembled together for the very first time, is sure to bring a new appreciation for this important opus.

This CD contains many cues in their complete form that were only heard in abbreviated versions in the film. We’ve also got 11 cues that were not heard in the final cut at all! We couldn’t be more excited about this release and are so pleased to be able to finally offer this landmark score.

Peter Ustinov first assayed the role of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in this suspenseful 1978 murder mystery. Longtime Fellini collaborator (and Godfather composer) Nino Rota matches the onscreen tension.

Patterned after the hit 1974 film Murder on the Orient Express, director John Guillermin's 1978 motion picture Death on the Nile, with a screenplay by British playwright Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth), was also based on an Agatha Christie mystery novel of the 1930s and featured an all-star cast. And it was also filmed in a lavish retro style that brought the running time to two hours and 20 minutes. To accompany this big-scale production, the filmmakers hired veteran composer Nino Rota, best known for his collaborations with Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2), but also a big record seller with Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968) and a recent Oscar winner for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part II (1974). In the twilight of his career (he died seven months after the film premiered), Rota brought his familiar romantic, lyrical style to his cues for Death on the Nile, which were interspersed with period source music such as Harry Warren's "I Love My Baby (My Baby Loves Me)" and Jacob Gade's "Jalousie." But he could also be playful, notably in the circus-like "Camels and Donkeys," making him an ideal accompanist for a movie that was occasionally winking at itself in its attempt to re-create a long dormant style. Released on the heels of Alec R. Costandinos' 1978 collaboration with Raymond Knehnetsky as Paris Connection, Trocadero Bleu Citron finds the two continuing their collaboration. Knehnetsky again arranges and conducts while Costandinos produces and composes the songs with some assistance from Arthur Simms. The album is in fact a soundtrack to Michael Schock's film Trocadero Bleu Citron, making it yet another conceptual effort by Costandinos. The side one-spanning, 16-minute "Trocadero Suite" is the standout moment here, though the dancefloor favorite "Grooves" also deserves recognition, even if it's far too brief for its own good. 2013 two CD collection. Legendary keyboardist and composer Bob James is one of the major architects of the '70s jazz-funk sound, and is also notorious among a younger generation raised on hip hop. Centered around some soundtrack music that Herbie Hancock wrote for Bill Cosby's Fat Albert cartoon show, Fat Albert Rotunda was Hancock's first full-fledged venture into jazz-funk -- and his last until Head Hunters -- making it a prophetic release. At the same time, it was far different in sound from his later funk ventures, concentrating on a romping, late-'60s-vintage R&B-oriented sound. with frequent horn riffs and great rhythmic comping and complex solos from Hancock's Fender Rhodes electric piano. The syllables of the titles alone -- "Wiggle Waggle," "Fat Mama," "Oh! Oh! Here He Comes" -- have a rhythm and feeling that tell you exactly how this music saunters and swaggers along -- just like the jolly cartoon character. But there is more to this record than fatback funk. There is the haunting, harmonically sophisticated "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" (which ought to become a jazz standard), and the similarly relaxed "Jessica." The sextet on hand is a star-studded bunch, with Joe Henderson in funky and free moods on tenor sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone, Buster Williams on bass, and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums. Only Williams would remain for Hancock's 1977 electric V.S.O.P.: The Quintet album to come. In addition, trumpeter Joe Newman, saxophonist Joe Farrell, guitarist Eric Gale, and drummer Bernard Purdie make guest appearances on two tracks.
